From the floors of Keleti, Budapest’s central station to the World Aquatics Championship swimming pool; Hungary’s capital has changed a lot for Yusra Mardini, the girl who fled Syria two years ago for a more prosperous future in Germany. But the hopeful journey turned into a near-nightmare when she and her sister found themselves in the Aegean Sea pushing a boat for 3 hours with 16 people safely to shore.
Accompanied by the Refugee Olympic Athletes Team, Mardini, on her second visit to Budapest (she traveled through Turkey, Greece and Hungary to reach Germany) competed in the 200 free and 100 fly this week as an independent FINA athlete. “It feels completely different this time when others accept you,” Mardini said of her trip.
